My fourth act of kindness was a walk called “Out of the Darkness” which was sponsored by the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention (AFSP). My big brother Mike was the brains behind the idea and started a fundraiser to raise money for the AFSP. He set a goal of $250 and was able to raise $425. Thanks Mike and thanks to all of the other donors (Jason Roberts, Jimmy and Stephanie Cato, cousin Loretta, Huma Rashid, Sean and Jennifer Flannery!!)
The walk was in Fuquay-Varina and I was joined by my big brother Mike, his good buddy Jason, my sweet sisters-in-law Kim and Krystal, and my hubby and kids. {Sean (middle brother) was unable to attend due to a foot injury}
The kids helped decorate signs for Grandma.
Li Na’s sign is based on a saying she has been using since my Mom passed away. She likes to say prayers for Grandma and then say “now let’s kiss it up” as she blows a kiss towards the sky. I know this sounds like an anecdote that I stole straight from “Chicken Soup for the Soul,” but it’s for real!
I am so grateful for all of my family and friends’ support during this time. My Mom’s death has ripped the carpet out from under me and I am slowly gaining my footing on this slippery new terrain. On writing about her husband’s loss, author Joan Didion says “a single person is missing for you, and the whole world is empty.” I feel less empty when I am working on/towards an act of kindness for my Mom. Please keep passing along acts of kindness ideas as I have a long way to go. Four down, 64 to go!!
